Description
This workshop is designed for multilingual employees who want to learn more about the conventions of basic workplace writing in the United States and improve this essential skill. In addition to studying and practicing the conventions, styles, tones and forms of various genres of workplace writing, participants will explore questions of cultural differences in workplace writing and how to address them effectively. Finally, we will spend time on common sentence-level concerns in business writing, including comma placement, sentence structure, word choice, passive vs. active voice, pronoun use and others. Participants will leave the workshop having developed a Personal Writing Guide.
Outcomes
Participants will learn to:
- Employ basic conventions in U.S. workplace writing
- Recognize and adapt to a variety of common workplace genres
- Ask the necessary questions, especially about audience and purpose, to tackle new writing projects
- Identify variations in tone and better hone their ability to appropriately adjust their own tone in writing
- Identify key cultural differences in U.S. workplace communication and know how to address them effectively
- Improve their sentence-level writing by learning to fix grammar and punctuation issues common to multilingual writers
- Recognize their own most-common issues and develop strategies to address them in their writing
