This year's Julian Clement Chase Prize ceremony features D.C. political commentator Mark Plotkin as the keynote speaker. The 2017 awardee, Victoria Rowe, will share her research.
The ceremony and reception honor exceptional research writing about the District of Columbia. The ceremony kicks off the University Writing and Research Conference, during which undergraduates present research completed in their first-year writing courses.

Awardee Presentation
Victoria Rowe, “Seek First to Understand: Exploring the Implementation of Culturally Relevant Education in the District of Columbia”
After demonstrating the educational disparity among D.C.'s black and white students and reporting the dissatisfaction that black students have expressed about local school climate, Rowe reviews education scholarship and finds that culturally relevant education could have a positive effect. She then interviews a pool of DCPS teachers to discover whether they use culturally relevant teaching strategies and whether the DCPS professional development programs have helped them do so. She concludes with policy recommendations.
Victoria Rowe completed this research as an honors thesis in the Human Services and Social Justice Program. Ms. Rowe teaches at Tubman Elementary in Columbia Heights and is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from the Johns Hopkins University.
