Professor Quave Co-Authors New Article About "Writing in Community"

"Writing in community: Relationship building and accountability in knowledge production"

August 18, 2025

Kylie Quave
With co-authors at institutions in the US, Argentina, and Canada, Dr. Quave has co-authored a new publication that proposes new ways to think about authorship and who is recognized as a knowledge producer. The paper describes "writing in community" as a process that centers care, abundance, and joy over productivity metrics. The paper pushes the boundaries of academic publishing by asking why is it that peer reviewers and editors are not also considered knowledge producers worthy of authorship? To that end, the writing community of original authors invited the article's peer reviewers and the journal's editor to contribute as authors for the final, published version of the essay. Moreover, the paper was published not just in English, but also is the first full article published in Spanish in the flagship journal American Anthropologist.

The article is available in English and Spanish.
