Two UWP professors recently won awards for their books published in 2023.
Professor Gordon Mantler, executive director of the UWP, won the 2024 Liberty Legacy Foundation Award for The Multiracial Promise: Harold Washington’s Chicago and the Democratic Struggle in Reagan’s America. The prize, awarded by the Organization of American Historians, marks the best book by a historian on civil rights from the founding of the nation to the present. It was awarded at the organization’s annual conference, held in early April in New Orleans.
Professor Caroline Smith won honorable mention for the Emily Toth Award for Best Single Work in Women’s Studies for Season to Taste: Rewriting Kitchen Space in Contemporary Women’s Food Memoirs. The prize, awarded by the Popular Culture Association, honors Emily Toth, a pioneer in both Women’s Studies and in Popular Culture and demonstrates scholarship that makes a significant contribution to the fields of Women’s Studies and Popular Culture. It was awarded at the organization’s annual conference, held in March in Chicago.
